FIRST THINGS:  A Primer for Gay Catholics

“Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?  If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him.  For the temple of  God is holy and you are that temple.”     (1 Cor 16-17)

Homophobia is alive and well!  It seems there is no end to the number of people who tell us that homosexuality is “wrong.”  They quote the Bible and give us story after story that “prove” homosexuality is the root of all evil.  Interestingly, the word “homosexual” was not even coined until the late 19th Century!

We all need to examine our consciences and listen carefully to what those whose authority we value are telling us.  We need also to be true to ourselves -- to listen carefully to the Spirit of God within us.

The website of DIGNITY/USA includes Daniel A. Helminiak’s  rebuttal to many of the issues more tradition-oriented people raise.  You may find it helpful and want to bookmark it.

Know Thyself” is an age-old maxim that is as valid today as it has always been.  Our development as human beings depends on our ability to love ourselves -- our true selves.  In our “Resources” section, you will find a list of books we recommend to help you better understand your faith and your sexuality:

In 1985, DIGNITY/USA wrote a “Reflection on Sexual Ethics” for the gay/lesbian person.  We found it to be an interesting look at ourselves.

We would like to hear from you regarding these “First Things”.  Has this been helpful?  What was helpful? What was not?
